JOHN PAUL BERNARDO of Global Access wins Novice Nurse of the Year Award

Best Nurse Awardee Debra Friedland, RN: “Nursing Is Teamwork”

“I am so fortunate to be working with an incredible team of colleagues,” said Debra Friedland, RN, a medical-surgical nurse at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s South Shore Division in Far Rockaway, NY. “Because of them, I am the nurse I am today. Nursing is teamwork.”

Debra’s colleagues awarded her the 2007 Nurse of Distinction in a Hospital setting during the 4th annual awards gala dinner on May 8 at the New York Hilton, capping a host of activities celebrating National Nurses Week. More than 700 guests attended the ceremony.

An 1199SEIU Delegate at her hospital for six years, Debra is an RN Contract Administrator, a steering committee member of the 1199SEIU Nurse Alliance, and a member of the Workplace Quality Committee of the national SEIU Nurse Alliance.

Other awardees at the gala were Yasmine Beausejour, from the Sephardic Skilled Nursing Home, as Nurse of Distinction from a Nursing Home setting; John Paul Bernardo from North General Hospital as Novice Nurse of the Year; Paula Ohlmann from Eastern Long Island Hospital, as Nurse Preceptor of the Year; Jennie Lyons, from Orange Regional Medical Center’s Horton campus as first runner-up for Nurse of Distinction; and Maryann Ey from Bon Secours Community Hospital as 2nd runner-up for Nurse of Distinction. Althea Bailey from Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center was named Nurse Leader of the Year.

The awardees were chosen from 67 nurses nominated by their nursing peers at some 30 hospitals and nursing homes in the New York metropolitan area. The annual awards are organized by the 1199 RN Recruitment and Retention program. - Link to Article
